— Geo-Based Price Parity

Geo-Based Price Parity — Same room. Three countries. Three prices.

Your guest in London sees ₹18,500. Your guest in India sees ₹14,200. Your guest in the USA sees $280. Same room. Same date.

OTAs show different prices for the same property depending on the customer's country, IP address, and currency with geo-based OTA price comparison, most hotels never know this is happening until a guest screenshots the difference and asks for a refund, but TravelScrape monitors geo-pricing across 50+ countries so you see every variant before your guests do.

⚠️ Geo-Price Gap Detected
UK guests are paying 28% more than Indian guests for the exact same room on the same date. A London guest who finds this gap expects a refund — or leaves a negative review.
Why OTAs Show Different Hotel Prices by Country — 4 Causes of Geo-Price Gaps

OTAs show a different price depending on where you're browsing from.

Booking.com, Expedia and Agoda all use dynamic geo-pricing — they show a higher price to customers browsing from high-income countries, and a lower price to customers browsing from price-sensitive markets, and with geo pricing rate parity monitoring, this behavior driven by IP address and browser locale is fully tracked before a guest even searches for a room.

Most hotels sign a rate parity agreement with OTAs — but that agreement covers their market, not all markets simultaneously. The result: a guest from London and a guest from Mumbai can book the exact same room on the exact same night for prices that differ by 20–30%.

"A UK travel blogger checked our Booking.com listing from London and found it 24% more expensive than the Indian price. She posted the comparison on Instagram. 80,000 impressions. We didn't know the gap existed until that day."

01
IP-Based Geo-Pricing
OTA detects country from browser IP and shows a locally-calibrated price
+

When a customer opens Booking.com in London, the platform detects their UK IP address and shows a price calibrated to UK purchasing power and demand patterns — typically 15–30% higher than the Indian market rate for the same property.

Example: Agoda shows Taj Mumbai Deluxe at ₹18,500 to an Indian IP user. The same search from a UK IP returns £182 — equivalent to ₹23,600 at current rates. A 27.6% geo-premium that your Indian guest will notice if they compare.
02
Currency Conversion Manipulation
OTAs apply unfavourable exchange rates that inflate the final price
+

When Booking.com converts a rate to a foreign currency, they apply an exchange rate that includes a margin — typically 3–5% above mid-market rate. Over a stay of 5 nights, this adds a meaningful premium that isn't disclosed upfront.

Example: Expedia displays your Singapore property to a US guest at $285/night. Actual equivalent at mid-market rate: $272. The $13/night currency margin (4.8%) is embedded invisibly in the displayed price.
03
Market-Specific Promotions
OTAs run targeted discounts for specific countries that create price gaps
+

Booking.com and Expedia regularly run country-specific promotions — "10% off for Indian travellers" or "US Flash Deal" — that create geo-price differences even when your contracted rate is identical across markets.

Example: Booking.com runs "India Summer Sale — 15% off" targeting Indian IP users on Taj Mumbai bookings. Your contracted rate ₹18,500 becomes ₹15,725 for Indian users — creating a visible gap for international guests comparing prices.
04
Device & Browser Targeting
Mobile app prices differ from desktop, and vary by device country settings
+

A guest checking your hotel on a UK iPhone with a UK App Store account sees a different price than a guest on a US Android or an Indian desktop browser — even when browsing the same OTA at the same time.

Example: MakeMyTrip mobile app (India) shows ₹14,200 for ITC Grand Chennai. Booking.com desktop (UK) shows the same room at £168 (≈₹22,000). A 55% price gap between two real booking paths.

Hotels — Geo-Price Audit & Monitoring

A 20–30% geo-price gap can generate guest complaints, social media exposure, and OTA policy violations. TravelScrape identifies every gap before your guests do.

Hotel Revenue Directors

Managing international distribution without knowing what UK, US or German guests see for your rooms. A guest complaint or social media post reveals the gap — not your monitoring.

❌ "UK blogger posted our Booking.com rate 24% higher for a UK IP vs Indian IP. 80K impressions. We had no geo-price monitoring in place."
✅ Monthly geo-price report across all source markets. Alert if any gap exceeds threshold. First to know — not the last.

OTA Distribution Managers

OTA contracts specify rate parity — but they don't always define whether that applies across geo-markets. Understanding what each OTA does with your rates across countries is a contract management issue.

❌ "Booking.com contractually committed to parity but we found a 22% geo-gap between UK and India for our properties. Is that a violation? We had no data."
✅ Documented geo-price evidence per OTA per market. Use in OTA account meetings and contract renegotiations with hard data.

Legal & Compliance Teams

EU and UK price transparency regulations increasingly scrutinise geo-price discrimination in travel. Hotels and OTAs need documented evidence of their pricing practices across markets.

❌ "Regulator asked for evidence of consistent pricing across EU source markets. We had no systematic data — scrambled to produce screenshots manually."
✅ Automated geo-price compliance report — all EU markets, all OTAs, monthly — formatted for regulatory submission.

Travel Tech & OTA Builders

Building a price transparency or best-price feature that needs multi-country rate comparison. Scraping 100+ OTAs from 50 countries simultaneously is infrastructure you can't justify building.

❌ "Built our own geo-price scraper. Booking.com geo-detection blocked our VPN IPs within 2 weeks. Product launch delayed 3 months."
✅ TravelScrape's geo-price API covers 50+ countries per property, maintained at production reliability. No VPN blocking, no infrastructure cost.

Hospitality Consultants

Running international distribution strategy for hotel clients — need geo-price data to quantify the current gap and model the revenue impact of different harmonisation strategies.

❌ "Client's international guests paying 25% more on Booking.com than domestic guests. Board asked: what's the revenue impact of harmonisation? We had no data to model it."
✅ Geo-price dataset per market, per OTA, per room type — model harmonisation scenarios with real numbers not estimates.

Enterprise Hotel Chains

Managing geo-price exposure across 50–500 properties globally — impossible to audit manually. Need portfolio-level visibility and automated alerts when any property exceeds acceptable geo-gap thresholds.

❌ "80 properties. 15 source markets each. 1,200 geo-price data points to monitor. Our team manually checked 20 of them last quarter."
✅ Portfolio geo-price dashboard — all properties, all source markets, automated alerts. Review exceptions in 15 minutes per week.

Our first TravelScrape geo-price audit showed a 31% gap between what UK guests see on Booking.com vs what Indian guests see for the same room. We had no idea. We used the report in our Booking.com account meeting — they acknowledged the gap and we agreed on an international pricing policy that's now in our contract renewal.

Geo-Based Price Parity Monitoring — Frequently Asked Questions

From revenue directors and compliance teams evaluating geo-price monitoring.

We use distributed infrastructure with residential proxies in each target country — not datacenter VPNs that OTAs easily detect and block. Our geo-price scraping uses real residential IP addresses in each monitored country, which produces the same price a genuine local user sees. This is why our geo-price data is accurate when most competitors' geo-data isn't.
We cover 50+ countries as standard. Most clients configure 5–15 primary source markets (the countries their international guests typically come from). You can monitor all 50+ if needed — pricing scales with the number of country/OTA combinations in your monitoring set.
Yes — every geo-price data point is timestamped and stored with the source URL and a screenshot. This evidence is formatted for use in OTA account meetings and contract discussions. Several clients have successfully used TravelScrape geo-price reports to negotiate international pricing terms into their OTA contracts.
This is evolving. In the EU, new price transparency regulations increasingly scrutinise geo-price differences. In most other markets, it's currently a contractual issue rather than a legal one — but it's a reputational and guest experience risk regardless of legality. We provide the data; you decide how to act on it.
Yes. We run a free one-time geo-price audit covering your properties across your top 5 source markets and all major OTAs. The report shows every price variant found, gap calculations, and gap type classification. Most clients discover at least 2–3 significant gaps they weren't aware of in this initial audit.
